The best LZ show ever (for me).

I remember with absolute clarity where I was and what I was doing when I learned of the death of John Bonham. I also remember thinking that there would almost certainly be a tribute on that week's Radio One Friday Rock Show. The tribute was this April 1, 1971 concert. I recorded it on tape and spent many hours listening to it. With the advent of CDs, I longed for the day when it would become available and almost everyday for more than ten years I would look in the local CD stores in a vain hope that it would be there. Well, one day it was! I was delighted. I hadn't listened to my taped recording for many years and it all came back. The concert has a very intimate feel. Not on the official version, though, are a number of points where Robert Plant and even John Bonham talk to the audience. I have always had one question - at the end of the broadcast version, Plant announces that they will be in "Tedrow next week, Tedrow" (I don't know if that is how it is spelt) and I have never been able to find out where it is.

"This is something we've waited for a long time on the Sunday repeated to Wednesday concert, and I know it's going to be well worth the wait. Would you welcome please Led Zeppelin!" John Peel announced the band. This is the famous BBC concert show that was released in 1997 legally. But here we have it 100% complete and unedited, and it is indeed a great, although not completely spectacular, show. Robert's voice is amazing, really showing no signs of the flu when he lost it the week before. Bonham is thunderous, Jones plays some of the best and heaviest-sounding bass I have ever heard and Jimmy is on top form. But there's a nervousness that adds a little tension to the show, most likely due to the studio atmosphere. The version of Black Dog is great and gutsy, and the one-two opening punch of Immigrant Song into Heartbreaker is very powerful. One of the best versions of Since I've Been Loving You I have ever heard, with Robert's vocals being the absolute stunner. The versions of Dazed And Confused and Whole Lotta Love are also spectacular. Just before the Whole Lotta Love, John Peel back for the introduction: "I'm going to sing on the next one" he jokes with Robert, who also made refference to Ray Steven's hit Bridget The Midget.

Plant was making a joke. The Paris Cinema was principally used by the BBC for recording comedy shows for Radio 4 ie the Goon shows were recorded there. I remember the stairwell down to the stage and seats contained photos of these stars recording their shows.
"Ted Ray next week folks" Ted Ray was a comedian who often recorded shows there.
The Paris is sadly no more, the BBC moved out in the late 80`s. The property is now occupied by a Japanese restaurant so you can still sit in that hallowed space and imagine the roar of Zeppelin hitting that lucky 400 all those years ago.
