Press Review Excerpt: In Friday night’s open air concert, lead vocalist Robert Plant sounded like someone had crossed his speaker wires and hooked them up to the radio of the blue Mustang in the back of the stage. Anything louder than a whisper reeked of tinny static. Musically, Jimmy Page was flawless but I’ve never listened to anything quite so boring. “White Summer” was an excellent example of music to cure insomnia. Led Zeppelin is a gutty blues band which had everything but guts.

Drummer John Bonham – like Page – gave credible solo performances which generally lacked anything worth listening to. John Paul Jones, the group’s bassist was actually pretty good, but it’s kind of hard to really get into a bass player.

You can’t blame Zeppelin for not really getting into their stuff because most of the audience wasn’t even listening. A youth who attended both the Atlanta and Woodstock festivals this summer explained the situation. “They didn’t actually play that badly – the crowd is what turned me off. The people here don’t really dig music, they just come because they think it makes them cool. In Woodstock, we had the real people – I’ve never seen so many ungrateful “teenyboppers” and just plain jerky kids.” [Sun-Tattler / August 1969]

The opening act on those two dates was "Echo", a fantastic local band. They also opened for many major acts at this venue. I would love to have any video, if any exists. P.S. -- Ronald McDonald ran the park!

My father's printing company printed posters for this show. I would love to know if anybody has one and if they are willing to part with it?

I remember watching Led Zepplin at Pirates World and it was amazing.

I was there with my best friend Pam. We were right up front, i remember being so excited. People know what was going on.during that concert, or do they. Well i do, that's one concert i'll never forget. As a matter on fact that was my first concert, but it sure wasn't my last. Peace...

Pirates World was an outdoor park near Miami. They had a stage on the beach that had a back on it so the band couldn't see the light show that was happening out at sea. Big forked lightning accompanied Jimmy Page coming down on the guitar. Trippin' psychedelic.

I was there too. They had problems with their light show and Robert Plant had some not so very nice words to say over the microphone . Fun memories.

Im thrilled to even converse with anyone else that attended the Zeppelin Shows at Pirates World. They played Friday and Saturday night. Tickets were five dollars in advance, and I think 7-8 at the gate.I was so amazed with the show Friday night, I went back on Saturday. If you were there, you knew then they were something special. A few years later, I traveled up to Tampa with a group of freinds from Fort Lauderdale for the Houses of the Holy Tour. This was also a great, great show, but  it was the Pirates World show, they're first tour, that I am most thankful for attending.

Couldn't agree with you more. Had just moved to Hollywood 2 weeks before. 13 and had never been to a concert. First ever and it was Led Zeppelin!!! Just doesn't get any better. What a memory.

I was 18 years old, had been playing in an American rock band in South America where my father was stationed, and had just returned to the U.S., a hotel in Miami.  I had been hanging out at The Image, where an an amazing psychedelic scene was going on, it was like being in Hippie Disneyland.  We had heard Zep on the radio, and headed out to Pirate's WWorld for the concert.  It was just over-the-top amazing -- Jimmy played his violin bow, they cranked out the songs with breakneck speed, and -- this proves I was there -- the set list ended with "How many more times", but, in the middle of the song, Zep broke into "Communication Breakdown", played the whole song, then resumed with the second half of "How many more times", which had the crowd flipping out.  One of the best, and I've seen them all, trust me!!!

August 22, 1969. A memory for a lifetime. First concert of my life and it turns out to be the best concert of my life. I mean seriously, LED ZEPPELIN!!! Rides all day, first weed and first concert, all for $5!!! Became Led Zeppelin fan for life.

I was there for almost every concert they had at Pirates World. Zeppelin was one of my all time favorites. I was on Orange Sunshine and I thought Robert Plants blond hair was on fire. My friends had to hold me down to keep me from trying to help him. I do remember some issues with the lights and maybe that's what set me off. The Rascals was my  very 1st concert. We used to sneek in to the park at night by way of a path through the woods behind the cabin I lived in and go onn the towers with the swinging bridge. We watched a few concerts from that vanatage point and had Soo much fun tripping in the slides.

Can you tell me the date that Mountain played at Pirates World?

The show that almost didn’t happen. A stoned audience stoked for Led Zeppelin. But just before they were to come on there was rumbling and flashing from the sky. The announcer came out to say Led Zepplin (wisely) would t play with lightning in the area. Moans from the crowd soon turned to chants of no rain. Miraculously a hole opened above us in the clouds. In another half hour or so it was a gorgeous starry sky above and Led Zeppelin took the stage. But that wasn’t the most amazing part and I have no idea if the band knew. The storm had moved just off shore in the Atlantic.  We got a fabulous show from Led Zeppelin with a cosmic lightning show behind them. What an amazing night. I can’t say for sure if it was August 22nd or 23rd but I do know it was a magic show. Does anyone remember which night it was.

My memory is of a very upeven show. Plant and Page both were complaining the whole show because power was going completely off and on  in the middle of a song. Plant sang "Whoever is fucking with power better stop or were gone" At one point Page drops his guitar and walked off stage untill audience screamed to come back. Did a lot of first albumn songs. You could tell they were going to be big.

We couldn't afford to go to Woodstock because we didn't have $25 for gas. Instead we went to see Led Zepellin at Pirates World. Tickets were $5 at the door. The small stage had a canvas cover on top and back but no sides. We sat on the asphalt until the music got going and then the small crowd of maybe 500 stood, if they could.  Not great acoustics but it was such a heady thing to see a live rock concert. I'm 76 and am so happy I was alive to experience the music and trippin life of that time.  I may be older now but in my head it's all the same.
