I have been trying to find any record of this date on this or the Vanilla Fudge site for decades. My band "Lemon Lime" was the 4th band on the bill. After the death of Martin Luther King the summer before, Dick Klotzman put on a series of 5-band concerts at the Civic Center. Of note was that Zep played well past their allotted time and Fudge was miffed at getting 20 minutes to play before the curfew. Best set of music I'd ever seen, and 40 years late, might still be.

My teen years friend Wes Eaton was always reading rock magazines and had followed Jimmy Page's career. He introduced our group of friends to Led Zeppelin and alerted us of this concert. To say it was fantastic luck to have attended this concert would be an understatement. They played most of their first album plus "Whole Lotta Love" which we had never heard. (Maybe other songs too, but hey, that was 43 years ago) Can you imagine hearing "Whole Lotta Love" for the first time live when Zeppelin was playing their asses off for their first American tour? Simply stunning. It's really hard to put this concert into words. Sadly for the other bands on the tour, Zeppelin kind of blew them away and we left shortly after Vanilla Fudge started to play. I recall others doing the same. We had just had a religious experience and didn't want to spoil the memory of what we had just witnessed. History was being made and even then we knew it. We had expected Jimmy Page to be stellar and he was that and more but it was Robert Plant, to me, who was the real stand out. He was young and absolutely vibrant. His voice was so strong it blew everyone away. He was wearing electric blue pants, electric hair and was so super animated you couldn't take your eyes off of him. To this day I have never witnessed a vocal performance that could top that one. Thank you Wes Eaton, wherever you are, for steering me to one of the greatest concerts of all times.

I was there, 14 yo & tripping my ass off with some friends. What a show....we didnt know who these guys where, but they burned down the house!!! Poor Paul Butterfield had to follow, along with Vanilla fudge. the show was over!! When leaving the arena we looked back at the marqee & saw "& introducing LED ZEPPELIN" What a mind blowing show!!!

i was 14yo & attended a concert @ baltimore civic center in 1969 with the then unknown Led Zepellin opening for Paul Butterfield & Vanilla Fudge. What a show!!! They BURNED THE HOUSE DOWN!!!! Poor Butterfield who had to follow that!!!!

I was there, by myself, because I love Vanilla Fudge, but was blown away when Led Zeppelin showed. I know the reviews had The Gun, but I don't recall them. I remember Paul Butterfield's Blues Band and Jeff Beck. No where does anyone mention Jeff Beck. Unless, I'm getting that mixed up with the Hendrix concert I also attended that year. I do remember his backup of Cat Mother and the All Nite News Boys, and I thought it was Buddy Miles. Not sure, it's been so long. I was on the job training in Baltimore for 6 months and it was the most memorable time in my life.

Vanilla Fudge had a big hit "You keep me hanging on" , a remake of the Supremes hit. So little was known of Led Zeppelin that some people thought the tickets were a misprint and expected to see a guy named Len. Their performance was as stunning as you would expect and when Vanilla Fudge took the stage they were booed.
