Twelve minutes of Dazed & Confused is aired on "Dit is het begin" ("This is the beginning") TV program on Nov. 12, 1969, VARA TV network.

Review in Top Pop Stars magazine: "The concert hall was packed, TV cameras were everywhere and the atmosphere crackled. Heavy, crashing Zeppelin sounds swept the audience onto another plain and the timing of their applause indicated their appreciation of the material. Wild, standing ovations brought the group back time and time again and they finally left the stage exhausted."

I think this is the one my older brother went to, the story goes it was a bit to loud, so he and his friends where listening to it in just outside the auditorium where the level was just right ( the concertgebouw is a perfect acoustical site, number 3 or 4 on the list in the world ever, so imagine it with the amps cranked up to 11).

A couple of years ago my brother and I went to see Robert Plant and the new Sensation in the Heineken Music Hall when this young guy came up to him and asked ; sorry sir, but you look like you're old enough to have seen Led Zep in the the flesh. I saw the embarrassed look in my brothers eyes, didn't wait for the answer and went for a couple of beers grinning all the way to the bar. Sorry this story isn't about me alas, I was only 2 at that time, bugger. P.s. why are people always complaining about 'ooh he/they didn't do stairway', like its the only song they ever did.

All the reviews here are in Dutch, most of them stating that the room was less than half full and the show was chaotic. I was there and I concur. The band sounded terribly underrehearsed, long guitar excursions that trailed out, Bonham repeatedly having to come to the rescue setting the beat again.

Photographer Laurens van Houten took me along to this show without having a ticket, handing a doorman 5 guilders. Inside the venue we went up a couple of stairs, leading to a small inconspicuous door that wasn't locked. And there we were, in the lounge of the Royal Family. He handed me a little box and told me to roll a good joint, went off and came back with Page and Plant. The joint was lit and passed around, pictures were taken and off they went.

So maybe that strong joint may have contributed to Led Zeppelin having an off night...

Anyway, another friend who was there remembers seeing roadies coming onstage hanging guitars around Page's shoulder, which he had never seen before and that Plant's amplification consisted of just two columns. The sound of the rest of the band was only backline. Those were the days, more than half a century ago.

And yes, Steamhammer sucked.
