Distant Drummer review excerpt: A notice was tacked on the door of each dressing room at the Spectrum last weekend requesting that performances be kept under thirty minutes each. The explanation given was that the police commissioner, fearing a rock-inspired riot, wanted the show over by 11:45P.M. The truth was that the Spectrum management, having already dropped a bundle in the three part pop festival, didn't want to lose another $1000 in overtime charges to the union employees, etc. The result was that in the few instances where the groups got cooking for the small crowds, the management literally forced them off the stage.
Led Zeppelin had to beg the crowd to let them off. They cited the "commissioner's order" as the cause for the abrupt and mutually disappointing conclusion to their set. [D.D. / 7.17.69]

I was at this show. It was an amazing night. The stage was in the center of the Spectrum floor, was round and rotated. Sometime during the evening they decided to stop the stage from moving. Therre were only about 3500 people in attendance so they told everyone to come down and sit near the stage after it stops rotating and we'll just leave the stage in it's STOPPED position for the night. I was blown away after that show. I saw them again in March 1970, this time they sold out the same venue.

I was there. The show was in the round. The night's order of performers went like this,as I recall, Buddy Guy, Al Kooper, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin and Johnny Winter closed the show.
I remember thinking that Page,in his crushed pink velvet pants whipping the bow across his Les Paul custom was the coolest guy I ever saw.

I was 14 in 1969 and my parents wouldn't let me go to Woodstock so my sister and her boyfirend took me to this show. I had heard LZ and really liked them. The whow started with Buddy Guy. Then Al Kooper. I remember he did I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know. He was playing a Gibson Flying V. Not sure if LZ was next or Johnny Winter. But Zep was great and then Jethro Tull. They were excellent. I went right out and bought This Was. I have a couple of Polaroids from the show which I'll dig up and upload. I also had a small reel to reel tape recorder that I took into the Spectrum (wow how times have changed) but I can't find the tape (arrrgghhh!). Anyway, just went to England this summer and saw Jeff Beck in Brighton and Jimmy Page was sitting 4 seats away from me. Sorry for rambling but I figure if anyone can relate to this it's people reading this blog....cheers..

Proof by my pics that evening Mr. Page was playing the Sunburst Les Paul,dressed in pink velour pants and pink shirt.He did play the Tele too,but I dont remeber which songs.I was 14 at the time.This was the best event I have seen with that number of bands,whew.Great memories!!!

I was at the show just shy of 15 yrs old I remember in the round buddy guy, al cooper, zeppelin , Tull and Johnny winter headlining. The Summer Pop festival . I saw Led again 2 more times at the spectrum. Great times!! Steve F

I had been on a double date for some R&R, since I received orders for Vietnam Nam, and I was on a 30 day leave. Not knowing what the future had in store for me, in the military, this show was a means of taking my mind off of my impending military responsibility. I believe the event started off with B.S.&T. followed by Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter(and I believe brother Edgar was with the band), Jethro Tull, and to complete the experience Led Zeppelin. This was unlike any event that exists in todays venues. Considering Woodstock was a month away and was about to change the face of live music, I considered skipping my military report date with Southeast Asia, and going on to Woodstock.
No, I did not dodge my responsibility, and so I reported for duty. My fortunes were soon to change when I arrived several days late for my report date to Ft. Lewis, Washington. I was not punished for my tardiness (nor consideration for being AWOL) and in 2 days I was given NEW orders. Off to Germany instead, for a 2 year tour.
Being at this event left me with an indelible memory of the beginning of a series of events that were to change my life. Led Zeppelin was to be the most prominent, positive musical influence effecting my life from that day forward!

Philadelphia July 12, 1969 was my first Led Zeppelin concert. I was seventeen and had bought tickets previous to the show. When I got there I jokingly asked the person at the ticket window if she had any front row seats. To my surprise I was able to turn in my tickets for front row seats. The ticket cost $6.50. The line up was Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Johnny Winters, Buddy Guy and Al Kooper from the original Blood Sweat and Tears. Back in those days people respected the artists more and there was no need for barriers between the fans and the performers. They also used a revolving stage for that particular concert and it was less than two feet tall. Since I had front row seats I was able to lean back in my seat and rest my feet on the stage when it wasn't revolving. The bands were maybe fifteen-feet away. I had the amazing good fortune of the stage breaking down when Zeppelin was playing right in front of me. It was like having them playing for me in my living room. That to me was amazing, that plus the fact that I got to see all those bands for $6.50 and was able to buy front row seats at the door.

I too was there. Standing stage right under the egg crate PA speakers/horns. My ears were ringing for a day. This concert as I remember opened with Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, Al Kopper, playing a Flying V and accompanied by strings and horns, Tull and then Zep. Added to the Zep set list was an encore that included Long Tall Sally!
