Setlist

Songs performed during this period include: Train Kept A Rollin', I Can't Quit You Baby, Dazed And Confused, You Shook Me, How Mnay More Times, Communication Breakdown.

Note

The band was booked to play by promoters Brian Stoker and David Richards:

"We booked Led Zeppelin for £100 and they went down a storm. Everyone loved it and I remember me and Dave had a drink with the lads from the group.

"I was talking to guitarist Jimmy Page and asked if he enjoyed it and he said 'yes' and he would come back. I said what are you doing next month and he said they were playing the Hollywood Bowl, so that was the last we saw of them."

The pair secured the band through a contact at London promotion firm Ellis Wright, which went on to become the Chrysalis music company.

"They also told us they had this solo act and they wanted £100. I said you must be joking because we had Led Zeppelin for £100. I asked his name and he said Elton John and I said no chance am I paying that for a bloke on his own." (courtesy: Hartlepool Today)

I remenber it well. They

I remenber it well. They were advertised as the Ex-Yardbirds.My ears rang as i walked down Easington Way back home. They were still ringing when I woke the next day. A realy fantastic night. I did not see them again till the Bath pop festival in 1970.
But we must not for ger that the Argus Buterfly also had names like Yes, Jethro Tull, Family, Free, Ten Years After, This Years Girl and many more. I wish I still had the cards to prove/remenber that I saw all these bands, most of them I have forgot.
The Argus was a fantastic place, small but full of life and music.
If anyone has the cards to show what bands visited in those days I would be very interested as I have forgot who played there.
I also was involved in booking Free for the Peterlee Tech dance in Durham. They wanted £75.00 and the commite thought that nobody would pay the extra to see them but the door was bursting on the night and they played two sesions...fantastic.
If you remenber any of this please write...Gary.

Slept right through it!

My Mum and Dad (Jim and Joan Foster) were landlord and landlady of the Argus through the late 60's and early 70's when all the bands played. My brother Stephen - then a teenager - was in the thick of it all but I was just a babe so have only just found out about these stories now. Sounds like quite a night. Bet you didn't realise that while all the music was going on there was a 9month old baby girl asleep in the upstairs bedroom!

tracing your cousin
January 31, 2014 10:08am Julie Grieveson...

If Jim and Joan were your parents then you are cousin to your aunty Gina's daughter Jean. I was good friends for years with Jean including staying at your mam's house in Richmond when Jean lodged with her during her racing days. I lost touch with her but would dearly love to find her. Last I heard she'd married, had a baby and was running a pub. If there's any way you could help me track her down I'd really appropriate it. Many thanks.
