England's Led Zeppelin and a crowd of 6,000 became good friends in two hours Monday night. The audience loved the acid rock group for its musical content. There were none of the old promotional tricks, no local DJs, no local bands, just the crowd and Led Zeppelin.
There was Robert Plant who looks like an Appalachian Jug Band reject, but who has more musical talent than the Tennessee Valley has water. And John Bonham who proved again that beat is only music without melody. John Paul Jones, still a little down over his father's death last week, but sending out vibrations in his organ solo.
Led Zeppelin is so much a part of today that it can easily transform into tomorrow. Its music cannot get much louder or its talent much better." (Milwaukee Journal, 9.1.70)

My friends and I wanted to see this show but all the good seats were sold out at all the ticket outlets so on a desperate hunch I drove down to the Arena the day of the show and went to the Box Office to see if there was anything left. "How many do you need?", asked the man. "I'd like four if possible", I replied. "Would 6th row center be OK?" (There is a brief pause as I pick my jaw up off the floor!) What a show, it will always be one of my favorite memories of age 16. They are truly one of the greatest innovative bands of Rock and the fact that they are still played on so many stations today is testament to that fact!

This is one of those shows where right from the beginning it is evident the band is on top form. Robert's war cries in Immigrant Song are chilling and incredibly high and powerful. In fact, this is one of the best 1970 shows I have ever heard in terms of his voice and its power and range. The bane is incredible too, turning Heartbreaker, Dazed And Confused and Since I've Been Loving You into incredibly powerful, unique and excellent performances.

i hitchiked from the south side, sat in the farthest, highest, very last row, and still have my $4.50 ticket stub. i was 2 months shy of 17. it was the first of three times i saw led zep--once, luckily from the 9th row.

I was 14 - I went with my sister who doesn't remember it and my next door neighbor. We were in the nosebleeds and I have since learned that it's just not worth it unless you are in what the kids these days call the mosh pit.

I read your comment about the Zeppelin concert you went to with your dad in 1970. I grew up in Milwaukee County and always liked Zeppelin a lot, though I never got to see them live. You were 12 years old, you say. I would have been 6 years old in 1970. When I was around eleven I discovered them. I'm just curious as to what songs you remember them playing, and what they were like on stage. If you wouldn't mind, could you describe a little about this concert you saw? Led Zep @ Milwaukee Arena 8.31.70

I was 14, my two buds were 15. We already had a band of our own and had worn out the grooves on the first two LZ albums. We drove from LaCrosse, WI to Milwaukee and stayed at our drummer's older sister's place. We were about 30 feet from stage, more in front of John Paul Jones. Immigrant Song was the opener. We hadn't heard it before- needless to say we and the rest of the crowd were (quite literally) blown away by the sheer power and volume! We were pummeled by the drums and bass- amazing!! Plant's voice, while distinctive on record, was like the point of a spear live. We passed on the free tokes.
To this day- best concert I have seen, legendary in my memory. Brisk.
