Press Review #1: The Rock show in Montreal: Led Zeppelin drives audience wild
MONTREAL -- The last of the loud British supergroups — Led Zeppelin — dropped its heavy metal rock on a packed house of 20,000 fans at the Forum here last night. The four-man group stomped and hammered its way through three hours of deafening rock, before a wildly enthusiastic audience.
Outside the arena, a police riot squad stood by ready to avoid a repeat performance of a riot which marked the visit of the Rolling Stones in the summer of 1972. However, there were no incidents.
Extra police were also assigned to curtail scalpers, some of whom claimed to be getting up to $50 for a single $7.50 ticket. Those who were lucky enough to have tickets heard a cross- section of the group's music over the past seven years, as well as new songs from an upcoming album, Physical Graffiti.
Guitarist Jimmy Page, dressed in black suit trimmed with silver sequins, played well despite the fact that he was suffering from a broken bone in the third finger of his left hand.
Vocalist Robert Plant bare chested and flopping his long, blond hair, was often overpowered by the sledgehammer drumming of John Bonham. John Paul Jones played well on the bass and keyboard.
Even, better than the music at times was the elaborate light show which turned the stage into a fantasy of revolving chrome spheres, and ever - changing color patterns on a veil backdrop.
The group flew in earlier yesterday from New York aboard a chartered $2 million Starship Jet, the same one used Elton John on his tour.

Nearly 20,000 fans packed the Montreal Forum last February 6, to see and hear Led Zeppelin's performance.
It was a thrilling moment for me when I caught my first glimpse of them. There was a majestic air about the sight of them on stage, and throughout the concert everyone seemed to be held in awe.
I was amazed to hear the multitude of sounds emanated by lead vocalist Robert Plant. He explained that this concert would be a spectrum of their work beginning with their latest album, "Physical Graffiti", soon to be released.
After the first hour they moved on to some of their earlier recorded songs. "No Quarter" featured John Paul Jones playing synthesizer and synthesized bass. John Bonham pleased the audience playing a thirty minute drum solo during "Moby Dick". He utilized a phase shifter, a device which makes the sound seem like it's traveling around the room, and had his tympani fed into a synthesizer that made him produce some unearthly sounds. At times I wasn't sure what instrument he was playing.
Jimmy Page demonstrated his musical creativity when he played his guitar with a violin bow, giving a whining sound to "Dazed and Confused".
They closed the concert with "Stairway to Heaven" during which hundreds of fans held lit matches in appreciation of their performing the song. Page's solo during the song was somewhat disappointing to me. He played some mushy chords instead of the vivid, clean fretwork I expected. The whole song seemed a little under par

Led Zeppelin is a professional group is every sense of the word. Their stage etiquette was the best I’ve ever seen. There are a lot of phony glitter groups on the market today that put on stage shows with smoke, fog and psychedelic lighting. Most of them need the diversions to cover up poor musicianship and writing ability. Zeppelin uses these devices to accent their music, not as a substitute for it. The Forum was delusional, jam-packed, and even more. In any case, the people who were not stone when arriving at the Forum, were, does not want, leaving, even the ambulanciers St-Jean.
With "Stairway to Heaven", it was the Grand Garrochage. The freaks listened standing on their seats the two reminders. Robert Plant told us: "The energy here is so high that we have probably melted all the way around this hole", ie. "The energy is such here tonight that we have probably melted all the snow at alen-towers." It was obvious that they appreciated the crowd as much as it loved them. By the way, the concert of Zeppelin in Boston was canceled on February 4 by the mayor of the place. Reason: the manager of the arena where they had to perform had, in a gesture of understanding, allowed young people to wait for the sale of tickets inside because of the cold. The youngsters grabbed the beer kiosks, fired up everything, made a fire on the rink, which, O Scan-dale, prevented a Bruins game tonight. Robert Plant did not hesitate to tell us: "You are the best! This was my second time seeing Zeppelin live and I feel so lucky to have been able to catch them twice. I managed to score 12 tickets in a block as a bus package from Ottawa and a great time was had by all.
Getting to hear all the new tunes before the release of Physical Graffiti was awesome. I have never seen another band that looked so comfortable on stage and they engaged the crowd after the first tune. These guys knew how to take you for a hop over the misty mountains and drop you back home later in the evening. The next day the concert was all everyone talked about at work.
After seeing many many concerts over a span of 40 years, this stands out as the best of them all - just fantastic!

It was a much bigger fuss to get tickets for this show than it was for the 1972 concert . In 72 I walked up to the Forum box office and made the transaction in less that 3 minutes. For the 75 show we waited all night outside the Forum in the snow as riot police kept a very close watch on us. I remember some idiot throwing a bottle at the cops, it was a bit unsettling. It wasn't long after this show that tickets started to be distributed by TRS. This of course was the broken finger show and I remember being dismayed prior but it didn't seem to spoil a thing. I really enjoyed the new material. One of my favorites at this show was "In my time of dying". We did not know this would be the last time the band would visit Montreal. When I speak with younger people about bands of our time this is the one they most wished they had the opportunity to see.

F...k man, was I ever there! I was only 16... Hadn't had weed yet at that time, but didn't to, considering what was all around... Not to say that before was better, it's just that better was before, that's all... It was said to be the firtst show when "Kashmir" was performed in public. Still remember the lights turning round during the chorus, sort of. With that song and with "In my time of dying" the show was awesome, to say the least. But even by then Plant didn't have the voice for "Stairway to Heaven" Mind you, what a memorable moment.

A 16+ hour train ride with two friends brought us to Montreal, on a cold journey to see the band of our dreams. And what a show that was! As a young 18 year-old teen, I was excited to be in a big city, but mainly to be with 18 000 fans in the Forum to see the musical group that defined my young life. Musically, it was loud and the quality of sound in the nose-bleed section wasn't the best...but we we're there, and we we're witnessing a great moment!
This show is forever etched in my mind!

"This ticket deserves to go to a real die-hard Led Zeppelin fan." My life would never be the same.I stood there in shock.My friend Mark had just asked me to take the bus trip to Montreal for the Feb 6,1975 concert.
In the early hours of Feb 6,my father dropped me off at a Toronto gas station/meeting point.The coach ride was an exibition of 1970`s herbal excesses.Half way to Quebec,the driver pulled over,opening all windows and doors,allowing airborne substances that had engulfed the interior like a sweet smelling cloud to escape. After trudging through cold,slushy Montreal streets,we entered the electrically, super-charged Montreal Forum.My seat was around the blue line,up from Jimi Pages gear.
This was the golden age of glitter/hard rock music. An FM radio DJ casually walked up to a single mic stand and introduced the band in French and English.The house lights went down and the famous arena turned into a sea of lighters and human anticipation.Flashlights created sillouettes of ghostly figures,breaking the darkness of the stage.
The thundering drums of "Rock n Roll" announced to all. Led Zeppelin had landed in full force in Canada.
A sea of floodlights brought Jimi Page,in the black dragon suit,Robert Plant in bell bottom jeans.....blond hair flying to life. JPJ,in a suit and John Bonham sporting a bowler hat were visual suprises.
My father had loaned me his binoculars so I was virtually on stage with the band.It was surreal to see fingers move,sweat and facial expressions so close.To this day these memories are as clear as a bell. Highlights of the show are infinite.
- Jimi Page taking center stage to start "In my time of dying" with spotlights on him alone
-JPJ played amazing bass during "IMTOD" I watched his fingers dance all over the middle part of the "fretless neck.
-KASHMIR.....simply the most amazing concert experience I have ever witnessed.Rotating lights,swirling mirror balls,spinning mood creating colors along with JPJ`s mellotron gave the Forum an oceanic,desert feel.The phasing on Bonham`s drums and Jimi`s guitar propelled a hypnotic vocal performance by Robert Plant.This was the first time we had heard this song!!!!! Physical Graffiti would not be released for several weeks!!!! JPJ`s bass pedals shook the venue`s foundation with earthquake force,vibrations coming from state of the art SHOWCO PA stacks
-TRAMPLED UNDERFOOT, another new song featured Jones on the funky sounding Clavinet/bass pedals.Large rotating light cabinets gave the stage a drag race atmosphere.Jimi and Robert moved all over the stage.....never standing still for one second.John Bonham,as he did all night.....sat high above everyone else and oversaw all the proceeding s like a conquering hero.
-MOBY DICK featured the clear,orange Ludwig drums and an amazing light show.You could see Mick Hinton in the identical "Clockwork Orange" attire that John was sporting..(remember I had the high power binoculars!!)
-DAZED and CONFUSED served up the same spectacular offerings.......the bow solo was great
The HEARTBREAKER/WHOLE LOTTA LOVE medley at the end was sort of anti-climactic at the time........we had been blown away by all the new numbers.........I appreciate it now with older more appreciative ears.........I was 17 at this time.
We had to rush out of the Forum right after the show to catch the bus.I don`t remember much of the trip back home.The feeling and energy from that show has stuck with me to this day.
From that point on I have compared every show to that one and to this day Feb 6 1975 stands alone as the best.

I was there--paid $11.00 for a ticket on the right side of the forum (facing the stage). The fee included not only the admission ticket but a bus ride with 30 of my close friends from Newport, Vermont. We were all absolutely mesmerized by Zep--the only bummer was that Plant couldn't hit all of the high notes--particularly noticeable on the finale in Stairway To Heaven. But Pagey seemed to be playing with all four fingers of his left hand--he had some brilliant moments. I was able to bring a camera in and took some high resolution 35mm color slides of the entire show--although from a forty-five degree angle stage right and about a third of the way up the rows on the side of the Forum--it was still amazing to watch the slideshow years later. I believe that it was a couple of more weeks before the new album came out (Physical Graffitti), so it kept us guessing what songs the concert songlist contained. But when I bought the album the day it was released, the first song I recognized was Kashmir--live it was perhaps the best number of the evening. The lasers during Dazed And Confused were amazing (relatively rare for a band to have in the day), and the rainbow lighting effect before the encore was something new as well. All in all it was a show to remember--I know I'll never forget it!

Early january 75', I met a friend who asked me if I was interested to buy a ticket to see Zep at the Forum... Even though I was fifteen at the time, and never been to a major show yet, I jumped on the occasion to see the best rock band ever ! ( I already had good musical judgement...).
My buddies had spent a cold winter night on the sidewalk in front of the Forum ticket outlet and I would have been a complete idiot not to take up this golden opportunity. 32 years later, I remember mostly the events surrounding the show itself; taking a one hour bus ride to get to Montreal, having no ride back home (!), hitching my way back home only the morning after... Of the show itself, I remember just a few things (illegal drugs were involved): They started with Rock & Roll, ended the encore with Black Dog but the part I remember most is the rendition of Kashmir, I have vivid memories of the giant mirrorballs revolving and shredding laser beams all over the Montreal forum during that famous Kashmir "riff".
For my very first big concert, I was blessed by the Gods of Rock !!!

Well it was a very special show for me, I had been a Zep fan since I first heard Led Zeppelin II in 69! So we went to our seats and just had time to sit down... and there it was - Rock and Roll! With Robert's blond hair flying and Jimmy's awesome stage clothes and magical moves, the mighty Zep was in full-powered mode. Considering Jimmy had had a broken finger not too long before (or so I heard), it was really a special set and I very much enjoyed watching one of my heroes play (I am a guitar player). Robert did seem to have some difficulty with some high notes, but most of his singing was quite good throughout the evening. Highlights for me were Kashmir, No Quarter (one of the best tunes they ever wrote, and so spritual in its mood, John Paul is truly a gifted musician), Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, and of course my favorite Led Zeppelin tune, Heartbreaker! I really enjoyed the long jams that Zeppelin are famed for - nice to have something unique to listen to every night!
All in all an unforgettable evening! Thanks for the undying memories, Led Zeppelin!

My First Concert

I was fifteen years old and had heard on CHOM FM that my favorite band (still is) Led Zeppelin was playing the Forum. This was to be my first concert. I immediatly began begging my mother to make the one hour plus trip from N.Y. State to the Forum box office to get a couple of tickets for my brother and me. Unfortunately, due to an injury I was not able to wait on line for tickets, instead my mother rose to the occasion and did so for me but while she waited in line the tickets sold out. As not to waist a trip to Montreal and realizing how important this show was to me,she purchased two $7.50 tickets from a scalper for $20.00 - What a deal! What a mom! My brother and I enjoyed ,as I remeber a three hour show starting off with Rock and Roll and ending with Black Dog. As I went through the setlist I can remember concert clips of each song in my mind. Great memories,hope to see them again!?

I have yet to eclipse the experience of this show.
January 1975, spent the night outside in line, in the snow and cold, on Atwater to get tickets.
Led Zeppelin has been my favorite band since 1971.
Even though there have been a lot of great bands that have come and gone since 1975, none will replace the Greatness of The Best Band Ever!
Had 10 front row seats reserved for their next concert, thanks Suzie, but they never made it back.

Here I am writing this today at 51 years of age. Took me a while, but never forgot the past. My big brother Pierre spend a couple of nights sleeping in a car back in that winter to get us tickets. They were allowed so many per person at that time. I got to have 2 tickets of my own, I chose a good friend of mine to come along. I had never seen such a setup, the whole get up for the band. I was 17 and so humbled by the whole experience. Its almost like I knew this wa a big deal, but never realized what it really was, not completely. Now, I know. The sound was so good, the music was better than what I had hoped or date to imagine. I had been to many concerts before, but this was very grand and the experience always stays with you. Thats how it was then, it was just so. John Bonham was humble, great, powerful, but most of all beautiful. What a drummer. I feel so priviledged to have been there.

A mixed show. The band sounds great and Jimmy, even with his hurt finger, plays almost up to his peak. Robert's voice is ravaged by the flu and he is nonexistent on stage for the most part, singing his parts and that's it so as not to strain his voice. Great version of No Quarter played and perhaps one of the best ever Trampled Underfoot versions. Dazed And Confused is excellent and the solo section of Stairway To Heaven is gorgeous. The encores are blistering, although Robert is really suffering here. Jones and Bonham own this one, but Jimmy is nearly recovered. In opposite, Over The Hills And Far Away is plugged with Page's guitar problems - it leads packed up for awhile. John Bonham was announced as Karen Carpenter according to Playboy magazine, when Carpenter was placed as "Best Drummer". Quite funny.

Montreal '75 - A Snow Melter of a Show

Well it goes without saying that this was a special evening. This was to be my second Zep concert at the Montreal forum since June 1972.
My girlfriend and I patiently stood in line on a cold wintery Friday night in December 1974 with high hopes of scoring some up close and personal tickets. Box office was to open at 9:30 am Saturday morning. The line of fans waiting as of 8pm Friday night stretched from the box office half way around the old Montreal forum building.
We ended up purchasing yellow floor seats, approx 10 rows back, centre. Fantastic seats. Wish I could find the stubs.
The show was truly spectacular. Hearing Kashmir for the very first time - and live was one of the highlights of the show. Thankfully my portable cassette recorder ably committed the show to tape and we were able to re-listen to the live versions of Sick Again, In My Time of Dying, Trampled and Kashmir while anxiously awaiting the release of Physical Graffitti.
A splendid evening - the best band in the world playing for an enthusiastic Montreal audience.
Can still feel the heat from the lit up Led Zeppelin marquis sign that went on at the end of the show.
Could have melted the snow outside.

i considered myself lucky to see that swhow it was standing room ticket but as soon the lights went off we found ourselves near the stage in the red section .what a show and we had a full pipe of kashmir ready and when they ve started the kashmir song we lighted it and bang what a blow one of the best rock n roll show that i ve saw hope to see them again in 2008 doesn t cost much to dream isn t it . ill be on line to get the tickets for sure c ya

I was at that concert.It was amazing.No back up band just 3 hours off Zep.I remember my dad driving us to the bus station in Ottawa to go to concert and telling us he read they would not do any encores.He was wrong I think they did three.Still got ticket stub from it.They only allowed us to keep the right hand part of stub with the date on it.One of my best treasures.

Hello! it was nice to read your review of this show.
You mentioned a recording you made at the concert. Is your recording the one that got into circulation and was subsequently used for bootlegs? You have to know, today there is real interest in tapes like this within the fan community. Some people spend a lot of work on searching for "new" recordings, locating the original tapes of recordings we already have, or looking for better alternate recordings, transfering the old tapes carefully etc..in order to document Led Zeppelin's live history as meticulously as possible.
The recording that is available from this great concert happens to be of rather sub-average quality, so it's possible that your recording is better.
Maybe you want to share it?! You can be sure that it will be appreciated!

This was my first concert too and I was totally mesmerized by Kashmir! I can still see & hear it so vividly. I was disappointed that they didn't perform Immigrant Song, because it was my favourite at the time. When my nephew discovered Led Zeppelin years & years later, he was awed that I saw them live during their heyday.

Hey,
I too was at this concert and my fav band of all time and to here Kashmir was amazing, I would die for a small piece of Zep now. Send me pix of th 75 show if you have any because I would really like to relive those day in pics. Wow 7.50 for a ticket is wrong today. I paid 130 to se Aerosmith in August 2009, really wrong.

to the couple of folks who asked, the whereabouts is uncertain. i lent it to a friend years ago for some eq'ing and clean up -he is searching for it. am not optimistic it will show.
I will renew the search and report back if it is located.

I was next to the guys who made that recording. We were all part of a junket from Toronto and sat together opposte the stage in the old Forum.
Suddenly as the lights went down a rather large double boom mike was drawn from a duffle bag and the rest became 'recorded' history. I recognised the guys from a Yonge Street record store I patronized and was later able to get a cassete copy of the bootlerg. before it was released. I still have one of the two casstetes somewhere.
The concert was one I shall never forget.

I knew it was you!!!! There could only be one Sam Greenspon in Montreal who liked Zep that much.
Haven't visited the Led Zep web site in a while so I sure hope you get this message. Do you still enjoy going to shows?? Just saw Ian Anderson in a mostly Tull show at the Art's Centre. Great show but very small crowd as our local hockey arena was sold out for a Roger Waters show.....I've already seen the Wall performed by Gilmore and Tull has always been my favorite live band.
Yes I'm still in Ottawa. I lived in Vancouver for a coule of years but when my Dad died I came back to help my Mum out. In fact I've been living with her for the last few years as she needs a lot of help with the house...I really don't want her going to a home if I can help it.

46 years Later my fantastic Brother In Law found this Site. Having been an Air Drummer and Audiophile and a lover of Rock i remember this concert as fantastic. My good friend Peter was unable to go so I stole his Girlfriend Wendy. We took a train from Brockville to go see this GARGANTUAN ROCK STARS --- a night to remember.
